Think about your earliest experience of becoming literate. This can even include things like holding a book correctly or scanning text left to right, etc.
My mother, grandmother, and first educational teachers were the first ones who support me to learn and read. My one teacher from elementary inspired me a lot to keep on trying and never to give up. Also, my mother inspired me in school with helping me with my homework after school. I was both encouraged and discouraged because I was encouraged to learn new things at school. However, I was intimidated from being shy and afraid to read out loud in class. The earliest literacy experience, I remember was in kindergarten or elementary when the teacher read a story or a book in front of the class. When we went to field trips to the museum or zoo when the guide was talking about interesting things that catch my attention. With that early experience like that it impacted my development by becoming a visual learner and remembering every little detail. It occurred both inside and outside the school learning new things by listening to others and reading books.
As you continue planning to think about your earliest experiences as a learner.
The first time was feeling literate when I had conquered my fear of reading in front of others. It took me a while to get over that fear, but each time, I practice reading out loud to myself or my mother. I tend to enjoy writing, to listen, and viewing activities in school. With the writing activities, I enjoyed learning how to write in cursive. When listening to video/audio tapes to a book in class was very enjoyable to hear. With viewing activities, I enjoyed when the teacher shows those big children colorful books and read front the whole class. Each one of those activities, I enjoyed the most about school. However, what frustrated me was sometimes doing the homework or reading out loud in class. My mother, grandmother, and auntie role model. My mother influenced me by her kindness towards others. She always goes out the way for others than most people do. I will never forget my mother gave this older woman whom she didn’t know the ride to her house, who had many groceries in her hand. I was too young understand, but now I remember my mother was being a kind person not to let this older woman walk with all this grocery in her hand. My grandmother/auntie influenced me to be a hard worker. My grandmother didn’t attend college, but she had to work hard every day of her life to achieve her success and to take care of her family. The three women in my life were my role model that build me into the person who I am.
Think about how you feel as a literate person today.
I feel like literacy is very important in life because you need to learn the basics like language, reading and math to survive in society. I continue using literacy in my personal life like continuing my education into college/ higher education. I do not read books much when I was younger, but I do read articles and current news. For those who inspire me to continue my literacy development are my family, community and myself. If I did not encourage myself, I would be here today.
